Free 30-day Writing Challenge rules & details

Dates: The Free 30-day Writing Challenge starts on 1-Jun-2020 and ends on 30-Jun-2020

Language and type: You can write in any language. You may choose to write articles, essays, or poetry. There are no minimum criteria for poems.

Commitment: This challenge is meant to help you commit to writing daily and publishing your edited output at least once a week.  So set a clear intention like this:

“I commit to writing 500 words daily, publishing the final edited, polished piece weekly, and completing the 30-day writing challenge successfully.”

Daily writing target: To participate in the challenge, you need to write at least 300 words daily, which may not necessarily be edited or finished. You may choose to write more than that, of course. To establish the habit of writing daily, you need to meet your daily writing commitment, so be clear about the amount of time you can dedicate to this exercise.

Share your daily writing using a shortened URL (use bit.ly) into the WhatsApp group. You can use Google docs for authoring and share your doc in comment mode if you are open to receiving comments and feedback on your daily writing work. Avoid pasting your content directly into WhatsApp.

Three strikes rule: You will be part of a group that is strongly committed to writing daily. Having a limited number of participants who write daily without fail is far more inspiring and motivating than having tons of participants who write sporadically.

To ensure this, anyone who misses their daily writing or publishing target more than twice, is out of the group and the challenge.

Publishing your work weekly: Writers who regularly publish their work are more motivated than those who do not publish their work at all. When people read what you write and give you feedback, your motivation gets a huge boost and you write more. This is a positive feedback loop.

Therefore, the second part of the challenge is that you need to publish your work periodically. You are free to publish daily, every other day, or twice a week, but at the very least your work needs to be published on a public platform weekly. You could publish on one or more of these options:

  • Your public blog
  • Facebook, LinkedIn, Instagram, Medium or any other platform
  • You may also deliver your content as a talk and publish it as a video on YouTube.

Once you publish your piece, share a link with the 30-day challenge group. This will get you readers and feedback as well – a win for all participants. This is a requirement of this challenge.

Content Reviews: You may seek reviews of your content from other participants in the group. Put out your daily content into google docs and in comment mode so that it can be reviewed, if any other participant is so inclined. You are free to review content written by other participants. Remember to be polite and gentle in your feedback.

Tip of the day: I will share a tip of the day / technique of the day. Incorporate this tip / technique in your daily writing.

Authoring tools: Microsoft Word, Google Docs, or your favourite editor😊. Also use Grammarly free edition to help with spell check and basic grammar.

Communication & Collaboration: WhatsApp. You will be added to the 30-day writing challenge group.
